Taking a bold step towards highlighting women’s mental health and the psychological and physical struggles of motherhood is the main topic of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story The Yellow Wallpaper. First published in 1892, it is today considered an important piece of feminist literature and this winter it is being presented in Greek by the Maria Karolidou Theatre Group.

Apart from the four performances that remain at Aigaia Theatre in Nicosia (on January 8, 9, 15 and 16), the theatre group in collaboration with the Birth Forward organisation and the Pancyprian Psychologists Association will hold a discussion inspired by the play. On Sunday 15, following the performance, a talk will be held under the title: Postpartum Depression: Gender Inequality and its Impact on Women’s Mental Health.

Dr Giorgos Metaxas and Christina Sorokkou, counselling psychologists and members of the association will lead the discussion, moderated by clinical psychologist and member of Birth Forward Margarita Kapsou.

Birth Forward acts as an ambassador for parents who wish to make autonomous choices about starting a family, at all stages of the process. It provides advocacy, support and training for families, and professionals.
